Rustic Cottage Lamp

MATERIALS

Approx. 1500 Craft Sticks

One 3/4' thick plywood, 9" diameter. circle or 8" x 8" square

One 1/4" thick 6" x 6" plywood square

1 light fitting (including cord & shade support)

One 14" length of 5/8" threaded pipe

4 wire coat hangers

Extra thick tacky craft glue or cool web glue gun 5/8"drill 1/4"drill

1. Using either the round or the 8" square plywood as a base, drill a 5/8" hole in die center. Drill a 1/4' perpendicular halt from the edge of the base through to the 5/8" center hole so they meet. Thread the cord through the 1/4" hole and up through the 5/8" hole and then through the threaded pipe.

2. Place and glue 6 Craft Sticks as shown in (Fig. A.) The center area should measure 5-3/4', inside edge to inside edge. Continue building in this manner (Fig. B) until there are 23 layers, or a stack approx. 3-3/4" high.

3. Indent the next layer, about 1/4 of the stick width closer to the center than the previous layer (Fig. C.) Continue building in this manner for the next 30 layers.

4. After placing the 31st layer, stop indenting the sticks and continue building straight up for 63 layers (Fig. D).

5. Cut a 6 pointed star shape from 1/4" plywood square to exactly fit on the top layer. Drill a 5/8" hole in the center of this for the threaded pipe to fit through. Glue this to the top of the base.

6. For shade, place and glue 14 Craft Sticks (7 in each layer) as shown in (Fig. E.) The center area should measure 8-3/4" in diameter. You will be building the shade from top to bottom, with the shade placed upside down.

7. Continue building by adding 7-stick layers for the next 8 layers. At this point insert a structure to hold shade to shade to support. To do this snip a 9-3/4" piece out of 4 coat hangers and lay them in pairs 3/8" apart across the top layer with each pair at right angles to each other (Fig. F.) Add 36 more layers of sticks.

8. Now proceed to flare the shade slightly to the outside, gradually, for the next 24 layers then. Then flare more abruptly for the next 24 layers. Finish the shade with 6 layers, straight up. Follow the shape in (Fig. G.)
